Like most young boys I was fascinated by Pirates! I would make a black eyepatch, 
find a floppy hat and stick in a long feather, them make a sword out of scrap wood and run around terrorising my younger brother and sister. And the most fun was talking like a pirate ( Arrrrrgh!!) and eating with my hands (until my Mom put a stop to that with a stern look and an implied threat of hanging from the yardarm).
So when my daughter was born I would read her pirate stories and we would dress up and play pirates. I even built a “pirate ship” play house one year, complete with ship’s wheel and rope ladders (pirates call them rat-lines!).
Then I got the idea to write a novel about pirates, partly from my life-long fascination with them, but also partly from a rather negative business experience where I hired a female CEO for one of my companies who turned out to be a “pirate” (long story, maybe some other time). Anyway, I started doing research and discovered that there were actually female pirates in the 18th Century who dressed and fought like men. Two of the most famous in history were Anne Bonny and Mary Read.
So my novel, Bad Company, is about female pirates in the Caribbean in the 18th Century and a modern-day band of female criminals (pirates) posing as legitimate business advisors.
